Obituary of Jack Shiell

SHIELL, John “Jack” Harold Of St. Thomas and, formally, of Paynes Mills, passed away peacefully at the St. Thomas-Elgin General Hospital on Sunday, December 22nd, 2019, with family by his side, at the age of 90. Dearly loved husband, for more than 60 years, of June Shiell (nee Stanley) and beloved father of Laurie Shiell and Mike (Mary) Shiell. Proud grandfather of Maclean, Maddie, and Marin of Georgetown, Ontario. He will be missed by his sisters-in-law, Margaret (late Don) Shiell, Ann (Bev) Elliott, and Carol (late Bill) Stanley, and his brother-in-law Jim (late Louise) Stanley. Lovingly remembered by his nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends. Predeceased by his parents Alex and Violet Shiell, his sister, Suzanne (Dick) Dougherty, nephew, Bruce Elliott, niece, Lisa Dougherty, and sisters-in-law Joy (Frank) Shimla and Sharon Stanley. Jack was born February 18th, 1929 in Windsor, Ontario. His family moved to Paynes Mills in 1947 where he farmed with his father and, later, on his own, until he sold, all but 10 acres of the farm, in 1986. He took great pride in the quality of his crops and beef cattle. He and June moved to St. Thomas in 2009. Jack, always, loved antiques, re-finishing furniture, tractor and machinery sales, and never tired of talking farming with his friends. For many years, Jack was a regular at Sunset Donuts for coffee, Lawrence Station for breakfast, and local church suppers. June, Laurie, and Mike extend their sincere thanks to his care team of nurses, physicians, and staff at the St. Thomas-Elgin General Hospital. Special thanks to Dr. Martin Cheslik and Heather who made Jack's end of life comfortable and dignified and to Pastor Don and Reverend Diane Macpherson and Shawn Jackson for their caring and compassion. In keeping with Jack's wishes, cremation has taken place. Visitation will be held on Friday, December 27th, 2019 from 1:00-2:00 p.m. at SHAWN JACKSON FUNERAL HOME, 31 Elgin Street, St. Thomas (519-631-0570) followed by a service at 2:00 p.m. to honour Jack's life. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that those wishing to make a donation in Jack's memory consider the St. Thomas-Elgin General Hospital Foundation - Palliative Care, Grace Cafe, or a charity of one's choice.
