Obituary of Stephen Gittings

With heavy hearts we announce the passing of Stephen Gittings after a short but courageous battle with cancer on June 15th, 2021. Born in Paignton, Devon, England on April 7th, 1947 to William James Pollard (deceased)and Dorothy Jane Pollard nee Mawer (deceased). Loving adopted son of Aileen Gittings nee Mawer and William Gittings (both deceased). Loving husband to Donna Gittings for 46 years. Proud father of Sarah Gittings (Brian Reeves), Katie Gittings (Jeffery Graham) and Matthew Gittings (Danielle Jarvis). Cherished Grampa to Emily, Anna, Evelyn, Andrew and Henry. Dear brother of Susan Pendykoski (Ed) and Elaine (John) D'Amico and Maurice Gittings (predeceased). Loved brother- in- law to Larry Krogh (Carol). Foster Dad to Ralvena Tuff (Ken), and Grunkle to Hayden and Hannah Tuff. Stephen will be sadly missed by a number of nephews and nieces and all his extended family. His canine companion Ruby, will also miss his presence and the constant treats he offered to her! Stephen was born in England and immigrated here to Thorold Ontario in his early childhood. He was in the second last intake of 'boy soldiers' leaving home at the age of 16. He spent 33 years proudly serving in the Canadian Armed Forces in various postings around the world before retiring as Master Warrant Officer in 1996 to live in St Thomas. CHIMO! In his free time, he enjoyed coaching Matthew's baseball teams, watching sports, hunting, fishing and spending quality time with family at the cottage. He also really enjoyed a good game of Poker and will be missed by his Sunday Poker gang. A heartfelt thank you and appreciation goes out to the Elgin VON nurses, doctors and PSWs for all of their care, compassion and assistance during this difficult time. (l am sure he would like to tell everyone that Jody was his favourite!) In keeping with Stephen's wishes, cremation has taken place and there will be no visitation or service. Arrangements entrusted to the Shawn Jackson Funeral Home, 31 Elgin Street, St. Thomas (519-631-0570). If desired, donations to a charity of one's choice would be appreciated. Personal condolences to the family can be made at www.sjfh.ca.
