Obituary of Garry Mertick

MERTICK- Garry John Mertick of St. Thomas quietly passed away at the St. Thomas-Elgin General Hospital on Thursday, March 23, 2017. Garry was born in Ingersoll on April 16, 1944. He is predeceased by his parents John and Hattie (nee Senicar) Mertick, his nephew Shane Ashton and his brother-in-law Ted Becker. Garry is survived by his loving wife Stella Donnelly; his son and daughter and their families; his sister Caron Becker and her children Shannon Ashton, Rick Becker and Jamie Becker; by Stella’s family Lisa Cole and her children Jayde Cole (Brennan) and their daughter Sloane, Kirsten Cole, Pam Donnelly and her son Cole, and Dwight Donnelly. Garry came to St. Thomas from Saskatchewan in the early 60’s, where he helped run the family business Klip N’ Kurl as a barber. He was employed by Auto Haulaway Ltd for close to 30 years and later Allied Systems until his retirement. Garry was lead guitarist with the band VIP’s in the 60’s, plus other various bands, was a member of the Sportsman Club and an Associate member of Royal Canadian Legion Br. #41-St. Thomas. He was an avid outdoorsman and hunter, spending his spare time in Sultan. He will be sadly missed by many lifelong friends.
