Obituary of Dorothy Jackson
JACKSON- Dorothy Fern (nee Fleming) passed away, surrounded by her family, at the St. Thomas-Elgin General Hospital on Thursday, December 29, 2016 at the age of 99. Dorothy is survived by her children Bob (Sue) Jackson, Rick (Wendy) Jackson, and Laura McKnight; by her grandchildren Rob Vannatter, Ken (Cheryl) Vannatter, Carrie (Rob) Morton, Don Vannatter, Tom Ritchie (Tanya Kilbourne), Amanda Ritchie, Shawn (Robin) Jackson, Aaron (Cathy) Jackson, Michelle (Jamie) Thomson, Heather Jackson, Sarah Jackson (Mark Girdauskas), Jeff (Sarah) Jackson, Lindsay Jackson, and Jason McKnight; 24 great grandchildren; 2 great-great grandchildren; her brother-in-law Calvin (Dorothy) Jackson; and by many other nieces and nephews. She is predeceased by her husband Robert Jackson (2004), her daughter Dorothy Ritchie (2002); her brother John (Muriel) Fleming; and by her great grandchildren Spencer, Andrew and Jackson.
Dorothy was born in the family home, on Maple Street, on December 3, 1917 to the late John and Mary Elizabeth (nee Parsons) Fleming. She graduated from Westervelt College in 1938 and would later marry her husband G. Robert Jackson in the family home, on September 8, 1941. Dorothy owned and operated the D&R Dairy Bar and Variety Store on Balaclava Street for many years. Dorothy was a member of Central United Church, WOHELO and a life member of the United Church Women. She was Past President and Treasurer of Valleyview Home Auxiliary, a past member of Maple Leaf Chapter #3 OES, Central Star Chapter #57 OES, Golden Acres Chapter #305, a current member of Omar Temple Daughters of the Nile London, Past Grand Noble Edna Rebekah Lodge #14, Past Worthy Matron Maple Leaf Chapter #3 OES, Past District Deputy Grand Matron OES, Past Grand Representative New Mexico OES, and Past Queen Omar Temple Daughters of the Nile.
Visitation will be held at the Shawn Jackson Funeral Home 31 Elgin Street, St. Thomas (519-631-0570) on Thursday, January 5, 2016 from 2:00-4:00 and 7:00-9:00 pm, where the funeral service will be held in the chapel on Friday, January 6, 2016 at 11:00 am. Interment in Elmdale Memorial Park Cemetery. Donations to a charity of one’s own choice will be gratefully acknowledged.
