Obituary of Elmer Avery

AVERY - Elmer Avery passed away suddenly at home on Thursday, April 16, 2015 at the age of 81. Elmer was a very kind and gentle man of integrity. He will be dearly missed by his loving wife Maureen; his dear son Edward (Christine) Avery and their children Teagan and Heath of Vancouver B.C.; his sister Carolyn (Terry) Brophy of Bayfield; brother-in-law Edward “Ted” (Nancy) McGuire of Tillsonburg and by several nieces and nephews. Predeceased by his parents Elmer and Edna and by his sister Doreen. Elmer retired from the Chesapeake & Ohio Railway, then enjoyed 25 years of retirement, especially his time in Florida particularly during spring training. He played baseball in St. Thomas for years, and was also an avid hockey player, spending his later years as an active member of the “Huff and Puff” league. He adored his family and his many visits to Vancouver to see his grandchildren. Elmer will always be remembered for spending many happy hours taking his son wilderness camping and canoeing, and building an ice rink in the backyard for the neighborhood kids to play on. Visitation will be held at the Shawn Jackson Funeral Home 31 Elgin Street, St. Thomas (519-631-0570) on Sunday, April 19, 2015 from 2:00 - 4: 00 and 7:00 - 9:00 pm. The funeral service will be held in the chapel on Monday at 10:30 am. Cremation to follow. If desired, donations to the STEGH Foundation or the Centennial Sports Club would be appreciated.
