Obituary of Catherine Machan

MACHAN- Catherine “Kay” Machan (nee Crosthwaite) of St. Thomas passed away in her residence at Elgin Manor on Sunday, January 29, 2012 in her 96th year. Beloved wife of the late Wilfred Laird “Larry” Machan (1986). Kay is survived by her children Madeline (late Eugene) Trudell and Greg (Deborah) Machan both of St. Thomas; her grandchildren Andrea Love of St. Thomas, Andrew (Allison) Girouard of Napanee, Melissa (Sean) Beilhartz of St. Thomas, Kim (Brent) Dawdy of Iona Station; her great grandchildren Aiden Love, Blake and Saphira Barker, Ellery Beilhartz, and Dakota and Colton Dawdy; her sister Madeline (late Robert) Moir of St. Thomas; and by several nieces and nephews. Following a short career in Windsor, Ontario, Kay met Larry, a handsome serviceman, while dancing at the Stork Club in Port Stanley. After a Christmas Eve wedding in 1942 at All Saints Church in Windsor, they settled in St. Thomas and raised their family. Kay became active with the local United Churches and was an active member of First United serving on the Board and the U.C.W.. She was passionate about making a difference in the lives of youth and for many years taught Sunday school and organized Explorers and C.G.I.T. groups. As one of the founding members of Pearce Williams Christian Centre, Kay directed Junior and Intermediate girls camps and was best known as “Skipper”. Kay was also a past President of the St. Thomas branch of the Ontario Humane Society. Visitation will be held at the Shawn Jackson Funeral Home 31 Elgin Street, St. Thomas (519-631-0570) on Tuesday, January 31, 2012 from 2-4 and 7-9 pm. The funeral service will be held at First United Church 7 Curtis Street, St Thomas on Wednesday at 11:00 am. Interment in Elmdale Memorial Park Cemetery. If desired, donations to the First United Church Memorial Fund, Ontario Heart & Stroke Foundation or St. Thomas All Breed Canine Rescue would be appreciated.
